Age-Related Changes to the Production of Linguistic Prosody

چکیده
Barnes, Daniel R. M.S., Purdue University, December 2013. Age-Related Changes in the Production of Linguistic Prosody. Major Professor: Jessica E. Huber The production of speech prosody (the rhythm, pausing, and intonation associated with natural speech) is critical to effective communication. The current study investigated the impact of age-related changes to physiology and cognition in relation to the production of two types of linguistic prosody: lexical stress and the disambiguation of syntactically ambiguous utterances. Analyses of the acoustic correlates of stress: speech intensity (or sound-pressure level; SPL), fundamental frequency (F0), key word/phrase duration, and pause duration revealed that both young and older adults effectively use these acoustic features to signal linguistic prosody, although the relative weighting of cues differed by group. Differences in F0 were attributed to age-related physiological changes in the laryngeal subsystem. Group differences in duration were attributed to age-related slowing, relative task complexity, and the cognitive-linguistic load of these respective tasks. The current study provides normative acoustic data for older adults informing the interpretation of clinical findings as well as research pertaining to dysprosody as the result of disease processes.

The Prosody of Discourse Structure and Content in the Production of Persian EFL Learners
The present research addressed the prosodic realization of global and local text structure and content in the spoken discourse data produced by Persian EFL learners. Two newspaper articles were analyzed using Rhetorical Structure Theory. Based on these analyses, the global structure in terms of hierarchical level, the local structure in terms of the relative importance of text segments and the ...
متن کاملA Longitudinal Study of Children's Intonation in Narrative Speech
Adults’ narratives are hierarchically structured. This structure is evident in the linguistic and prosodic domains. Children’s narratives have a flatter structure. This structure is evident in the linguistic domain, but less is known about the prosodic domain. Here, we report results from a longitudinal study of children’s narratives that enhance our understanding of the development of discours...
متن کاملVoice Quality and f0 in Prosody: Towards a Holistic Account
This paper presents a discussion of the role of voice quality in prosody. Illustrations from past production and perception data by the authors indicate that source parameters other than f0 are an inherent part of prosody, implicated in both its linguistic and paralinguistic functions. While prosodic (intonational) analyses of a language tend to be largely presented in terms of f0 dynamics, the...
متن کاملExamining the neural mechanisms involved in the affective and pragmatic coding of prosody
The vocal expression of humans includes expressions of emotions, such as anger or happiness, and pragmatic intonations, such as interrogative or affirmative, embedded within the language. These two types of prosody are differently affected by the so-called push and pull effects. Push effects, influenced by psychophysiological activities, strongly affect emotional prosody, whereas pull effects, ...
متن کاملThe link between prosody and language skills in children with specific language impairment (SLI) and/or dyslexia.
BACKGROUND Children with specific language impairment (SLI) and dyslexia are known to have impairments in various aspects of phonology, which have been claimed to cause their language and literacy impairments. However, 'phonology' encompasses a wide range of skills, and little is known about whether these phonological impairments extend to prosody. AIMS To investigate certain prosodic abiliti...
